CESTSEN, a Shenzhen-based sensor technology manufacturer, has released the latest version of its MR-50EXP handheld radiation detector — a compact, field-ready instrument that combines Geiger tube accuracy with a new upper-computer software package and USB interface. It succeeds the company's EST series gas detector platform and was engineered for professionals who need a dependable handheld radiation detector in the field, in the warehouse, or on the production line.
"Radiation safety is no longer an industrial-only concern," the CESTSEN engineering team explains. "Customs inspectors, medical physics staff, scrap metal traders, building material importers and even jewellery dealers all need a handheld radiation detector they can trust at a moment's notice. The MR-50EXP was designed to be that instrument — light enough to carry all day, accurate enough to defend in a compliance audit."

Unlike single-purpose Geiger counters, the MR-50EXP simultaneously measures alpha, beta, gamma and X-ray radiation. Users can read results in µSv/h, mR/h, CPS, CPM, accumulated total, Bq/cm² and Bq/L — seven measurement modes in one device, switchable on a 60 mm × 42 mm high-definition LCD that displays both numeric values and graphical bar charts.
The instrument is built around a genuine LND7317 Geiger-Mueller tube (45 mm / 1.75" diameter) and applies advanced energy compensation technology, so readings stay consistent across different radiation energies. The measurable energy range spans 20 KeV to 3 MeV, with a determination accuracy of ±10%. Detection covers 0.001–100 mR/h, 0.01–1000 µSv/h, 0–300,000 CPM and 0–5,000 CPS.
The defining upgrade of the EXP version is its USB output port and dedicated host software. Instead of transcribing readings by hand, users connect the handheld radiation detector to a laptop and stream measurement values in real time for display, curve analysis and long-term recording — ideal for radiation safety reporting, environmental monitoring projects and university research.
Field feedback has shaped a broad application profile for this handheld nuclear radiation detector:
